New Traffic Fine Regulations in Argentina

In February, the National Traffic Law in Argentina included a new regulation that exempts certain drivers from paying fines for offenses that have expired. According to this law, traffic violations cease to be effective within two to five years, depending on the severity of the offense committed.

Minor offenses, such as exceeding the speed limit by 10% or double parking, fall into this category. To carry out this process, it is necessary to present the required documentation and complete the procedure in person. On the other hand, serious violations such as driving in the wrong direction or running a red light are considered serious offenses.

Both in the City of Buenos Aires and in the Province, the deadlines for minor and serious fines are the same as at the national level. If a driver wishes to remove a fine that has expired, they must request its cancellation from the competent authorities. This procedure can be carried out in person or virtually, and in both cases, it is before the General Directorate of Administration of Infractions (DGAI) in Buenos Aires.

To carry out this process in person, it is necessary to obtain an appointment and go to the DGAI to request cancellation. Subsequently, a virtual hearing is held to resolve the case.

In summary, drivers in Argentina now have the possibility to eliminate fines for expired offenses thanks to the new regulations of the National Traffic Law. Both minor and serious offenses have specified expiration deadlines, and the procedure to request the elimination of fines can be done both in person and virtually before the DGAI.
